Question 2:9 Why Do Some Brushes Have Saw Cuts In The Face?

 

These saw cut, which generally only apply to slip ring brushes, serve two functions. 

 

Firstly the angled cut collects and expels dust to the side.

 

Secondly the cut tends to interrupt the contact face air cushion and therefore distribute the arcing across the brush face and minimize the tendency of the ring to develop grooving.
